Wisconsin Football Camp Update: Young CBs Show Off Excellent Skills Early On

The Wisconsin U.S. football team earned a break from practice this afternoon after a great workout, especially on defense.

Underclass cornerbacks Jonas Duclon AND Loving Snowden These are two players who came into camp vying for potential playing time. Their recent performances have given the staff plenty to think about as they decide which players will take on the role. Both cornerbacks could become stars on the Wisconsin defense if they can continue their good streak through the end of camp.

Wisconsin Football Cornerbacks Jonas Duclona and Amare Snowden Show Off Their Great Camps

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell is shown during a spring football practice Thursday, April 25, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Badgers football team plays its first game of the season against Western Michigan on Aug. 31.

If there is any position group that the Wisconsin football team has excelled at so far, it is the defense. The defensive line showed its depth and skill early on, but the defense made plays and showed how deep the positional space is.

In particular, the corner defenders in the younger grades Jonas Duclon AND Loving Snowden have recently taken their practice performances up a notch. Duclona, a sophomore from Florida, was just below the cut last season, almost earning a role on one pitch. This season, however, Duclona has returned with a more refined level of play that could solidify a starting role at cornerback.

Snowden, a Michigan native, is a redshirt freshman cornerback who presents a different look for Wisconsin. Last season, the Wisconsin football staff made the decision to redshirt Snowden and exploit the season to develop his game technically. So far in camp, Snowden has made plays, including a recent interception that seems to have really fired up the defensive staff.

What role could Duclon and Snowden play on the Wisconsin Badgers football team’s defense?

In Duclona’s case, the Wisconsin defense could consider using a defensive back in the slot, given his speed and agility. Duclona was once a high jumper and a talented basketball player, which further showcases his athleticism. The defensive back has an unusual combination of quick reflexes, speed, and an incredible leaping ability.

Duclona can closely track players, especially in man-to-man defense, but the defender also excels in zone defense. The defensive back has the ability to break up 50-50 passes and has the awareness to stick to his assignment at all times. Duclona played in very circumscribed roles last season, recording two tackles in two games.

In Snowden’s case, the Wisconsin football defense could consider using the defensive back as a safety or more of a hybrid player overall. Snowden is a powerful cornerback, standing 6-foot-4 and weighing in at around 210 pounds, now that his frame has been filled out. The defensive back is a massive, physical athlete with complementary speed who can keep up with other massive receivers on the outside.

Snowden still needs time to develop technically, especially if the Wisconsin football staff considers moving him to the lasting safety position. But his raw playmaking skills were evident in camp through the plays he made, and he continues to make a case for why he should be on the field this season.

Wisconsin’s secondary faces tough challenges against a mighty receiving core

One of the most compelling things to watch during Wisconsin football camp was the battle between the quarterbacks and the defense. Wisconsin struggled in the receiving department last season, in part because of the quarterback situation, and now has a core of players who are looking to make an impact. On the defensive side, Wisconsin currently has 21 defensive backs and far too little playing time for all of them.

The defenders worked strenuous in live drills, pulling off interceptions and making great aerial plays to defend passes. The Wisconsin football team has incredible depth this year, and that was evident throughout camp, especially in those two position rooms.

It will be compelling to see what Wisconsin does with its players and how they divide up playing time. Ricardo Hallman AND Hunter WohlerThe rest of the defensive back positions are pretty open as Wisconsin wants everyone to show what they have to offer at this point.
