With a tough performance against #4 Alabama Crimson Tide Wisconsin’s error-plagued football program may need to change.
Coach Luke Fickell was hired by the program almost two years ago and begins his second full season with the Badgers in 2024. Fickell was recruited by the Wisconsin program with hopes of setting modern standards in terms of success, competitiveness and ongoing acceptance on the football field. However, there has been no sunshine or rainbow for Fickell as the Wisconsin football team continues to struggle to keep up with the power punching in college football.
Wisconsin football coach Luke Fickell is trying to keep the matchup at Alabama competitive
The Wisconsin football team suffered its first loss of the season when the Alabama Crimson Tide visited Madison and upset the Badgers. Wisconsin had hoped they could stay competitive against the Crimson Tide, but when quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was injured, the floodgates opened. The Badgers made mistakes against the Crimson Tide that really bit them.
Wisconsin had four fumbles and a muffed punt, basic mistakes a team simply can’t make at a high level. The Badgers had no chance of beating the Crimson Tide, but came into the game hoping to keep them close. Wisconsin was unable to accomplish this goal, playing Alabama tiny multiple times throughout the game.
Giving Alabama any advantage is a mistake because the team takes advantage of its touchdowns and the precision of its plays. Wisconsin really played slower against the Crimson Tide as everything they managed to put on the field backfired. Not only will the Badgers have to go back to the drawing board after the loss, but they will also have to consider changing the way they play and even making a potential personnel change to revitalize the team.
While a mid-season personnel change seems extremely unlikely, the Badgers could consider changing something delayed in the season.
Does the Wisconsin Badgers football program need another personnel change?
After coach Luke Fickell and his staff were hired by the Wisconsin football program, it was thought they were here to stay. But the real question is: How long can a program last before it decides to lay off a staff member or even the entire staff? The answer may not be found until Wisconsin finishes the season and finds out where they will land after the final game of the regular season.
If Fickell and company suffer another defeat this season and are unable to secure at least a cup win, the coach may enter the 2025 season with impatience. Even if Wisconsin were to experience a complete disaster this year, it doesn’t seem like the school would be willing to let Fickell go just yet. Fickell has spent many seasons digging Cincinnati out of the dirt and achieving what he has achieved with the program.
However, Fickell also received a much better talent base early on at Wisconsin and still struggled to achieve anything on the field last season. You can’t blame Fickell alone, as offensive coordinator Phil Longo also struggled. The offense has dealt with a number of freak injuries this season and last, but still struggles to find any consistency.
The Wisconsin football program will likely start the 2025 season with the same staff unless the offense actually flops.
