Wisconsin football appears to have found a up-to-date quarterback when Billy Edwards Jr. decided to take his talents to Madison through the college football transfer portal.
However, news of Edwards’ arrival to the program was immediately met with an update regarding the departure of two of the Badgers’ top bottom-field players for the 2024 college football season, with wide receivers Will Pauling and C.J. Williams reportedly entering the transfer portal.
By Jesse Temple of The Athletic: :
Wisconsin’s wide receiver room will see more changes. Will Pauling and CJ Williams in the transfer portal. Pauling caught 42 passes for 407 yards and 3 TDs. Williams had 16 catches for 248 yards and 2 TDs.
In post on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter), redshirt junior Pauling says goodbye to the Badgers with a classic message.
“I want to thank Lake Fickell, my coaches, teammates, and the entire UW academic staff and community for their support and belief in me. This decision was not easy and I understand that it may not make sense for everyone. However, I truly believe that this is where God is calling me and that I must obey,” Pauling wrote. “I am excited about what lies ahead and grateful for everything I have accomplished here at UW.”
Pauling began his college football career with the Cincinnati Bearcats before moving on to the Badgers in 2023.
On the other hand, Williams is also a junior. He played his first college season with the USC Trojans in 2022, then transferred to the Badgers in 2023.
Right now, Wisconsin has the total 19 outgoing transfersincluding quarterbacks Braedyn Locke and Tyler Van Dyke.
Social media reactions to Wisconsin football team wide receivers entering the transfer portal
Here are some of the fan reactions to Williams and Pauling’s transfer portal decisions:
“They waited until the camp cleared before making the announcement.”
“When they saw the quarterback from Maryland transfer, they got out of there quickly.”
“It’s commercial at this point. These players now have complete confidence in the coaching and the system. None of the players who left went to great programs. At what point do you, as an athletic director, wonder what the reason is?”
“I have nothing against. Trech [Kekahuna ] he said he would play. I assumed Pauling would transfer. Williams is 2 years old and shows minimal flashes. Next man in line. Play Burroughs and get his brother to go to Wisconsin.”
“It’s brutal. Fickell boys. Pauling was the guy who played a key role.
“Cholera. It’s demanding to get excited about football these days.
