Wisconsin football will soon be making some significant changes to its offense, which can be expected following this decision walk away from Phil Longo AND hire Jeff Grimes as the Badgers’ offensive coordinator.
One change that may occur in the offense under Grimes’ supervision concerns the quarterback’s ability to play with his legs.
New Wisconsin Football OC Jeff Grimes talks about what he wants in a QB
“I think they have to be able to provide some athleticism, and I think in two ways,” Grimes said of what he would like to see in a quarterback (h/t Rohan Chakravarthi from Bucky’s 5th District). “First of all, they have to have the ability to run and get out of trouble when you throw the ball. And then I want them to present some level of threat to the defense. How much it will be depends on many other factors. I look at it on a sliding scale,” Grimes added.
Wisconsin Football’s quarterbacks were well protected heading into the 2024 season, as evidenced by the Badgers finishing 10th in the nation in passing. 3.15 percent offensive quarterback sack rate. However, even with this pass protection, the Badgers ranked 86th in the country with a 2.96% offensive interception rate. Additionally, the Badgers finished just 109th in the FBS with a 56.51% pass completion rate.
Perhaps a more mobile playmaker could be more right in passing the ball while escaping from defenders.
“Ideally you want to have a big guy who is a great thrower and a good runner,” Grimes added. “But I think there are very few teams that are talented enough to play a quarterback who can’t move much anymore.”
Grimes made his position even clearer.
“I wouldn’t take a guy I didn’t think could run a race.”
