Wisconsin football: Junior OL power forward impresses during 2024 training camp

The Wisconsin football staff has been extremely impressed, especially this camp, with one of its younger offensive linemen.

Former four-star offensive lineman Kevin Heywood He has shined for the Badgers so far this camp, making waves despite being a first-year player. Heywood was the highest-rated player in the 2024 recruiting class by Wisconsin’s staff, who ranked him 25th overall as a class. While Heywood still may not touch the field this upcoming season, he has certainly proven he is ready to hit the field for the Badgers.

If there’s one thing the Wisconsin football staff has welcomed this offseason, it’s competition, where the team pushes each other to be better. The Badgers admit they didn’t push each other as much as they wanted to last season, and the results on the field were indigent. In order to achieve goals they believe are achievable, Wisconsin has opened up and encouraged all of its players to compete for roles on the field.

One player in particular really took advantage of the situation as he proved to the staff that he was a capable player. Attacker Kevin Heywood signed with Wisconsin as their top-rated recruit in the 2024 recruiting class. Heywood was rated a four-star recruit and remained ranked in the top 100 nationally throughout his recruiting season.

Although Heywood wasn’t expected to compete for a starting role this upcoming season, he impressed enough in practice to earn a spot on the first team. The Wisconsin football staff is excited about his development and sees a future star on their hands.

Heywood showed strength and football intelligence early in the camp

So far in camp, Heywood has shown both strength and football intelligence in his play on the field. Heywood has impressed in particular with his ability to catch rushers and read blitzes. Heywood’s strength has also been noticeable both on and off the field, both dominating the gym and holding down large men.

Coming out of high school, Heywood was known for being an clever player who could avoid penalties and blocks without having to hold. The offensive point guard was also known for his agile footwork and ability to block both smaller, faster players and bigger, stronger ones.

Between Heywood’s intelligence and his ability to react appropriately on the field, there’s no doubt the offensive playmaker will succeed. The question is whether Heywood will be given the chance to shine this upcoming season.

Can Heywood break Starting lineup Wisconsin Badgers football team?

For Heywood to make the starting lineup this season, he would likely have to get injured, which is something no one wants. Senior Jack Nelson is currently the starter at left tackle ahead of Heywood, while junior Riley Mahlman starts at right tackle.

With Heywood already having players with experience of starting football, it seems unlikely that Heywood will be able to get ahead of either of them. Heywood has been rotating through the first-team squad recently to prepare for situations where he needs to be brought into the game.
