Wisconsin football: Luke Fickell still ‘the guy’ to lead Badgers in 2024 and beyond

While the Wisconsin football team struggled with Alabama Crimson TideCoach Luke Fickell remains the man for the future.

Wisconsin struggled in a 42-10 loss to the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide without quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. Van Dyke injured his knee early and is expected to miss the season.

Backup quarterback Braedyn Locke has been called a starter-caliber player by the Wisconsin football staff in the past. Locke was forced to play again early in the season due to injury, much like the quarterback had to do last season for Tanner Mordecai. Despite the unexpected events in the game, some Wisconsin fans want Coach Fickell or members of the staff to go.

Many Wisconsin football fans believe that Fickell has failed to bring a “better” team to the field, with a 9-7 record to date. While some believe that Fickell is on his way out, many others believe that Fickell needs more time to develop something special in Madison.

The coach took the Badgers to a bowl game last season after going 7-5 in the regular season. Wisconsin football ranked 21st last season in total offense allowed and had one of the best pass-defense units in the country.

Fickell was hired by Wisconsin to coach the Badgers in November 2022 and in turn hired coordinators Phil Longo and Mike Tressel.

The Wisconsin football program is in the hands of one man, and barring a catastrophic setback, coach Luke Fickell will continue to lead the team.

Fickell began his tenure with the Badgers last season and reached the playoffs in his first year as coach. Fans have had higher expectations of the coach this season, but the roster itself still needs time to reach the next level.

The coach was assigned a team with recruiting classes ranked 44th, 16th and 27th in the three previous years. There are still a few talents left on the roster, while other talents have moved on from the program over time as changes have occurred. Fickell has three classes ranked in the mid-20s so far, but he has used the transfer portal to find players to temporarily fill holes on the team.

The coordinators may not do their jobs perfectly, but Fickell does what he can to motivate the team on the field. In addition to the team on the field, Fickell is also a key part of the recruiting process for the Wisconsin football program. The coach simply needs more time to put a polished, finished product on the field that can compete with the so-called “top dogs” in the college football landscape.

While the coach will be protected, the same cannot be said for Phil Longo and Mike Tressel and their work with the Wisconsin football program.
