The Wisconsin football coaching staff announced yesterday afternoon who will be the starting quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season.
Despite winning the starting role, Hurricanes in Miami Transfer quarterback Tyler Van Dyke said he will continue to “fight” for his position. Van Dyke, who defeated Braedyn Locke to a starting role, he has previously been a backup in his career and understands that his role depends on success. Now that the point guard is starting to play his role, he feels it is time to focus on the upcoming season.
Wisconsin Football Staff Names Tyler Van Dyke Quarterback for 2024 Season
In a move that was to be expected, the Wisconsin football staff announced that quarterback Tyler Van Dyke would be a starter for the 2024 season. Van Dyke was previously a quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes but entered the transfer portal at the end of last season.
After acquiring Van Dyke, the Wisconsin staff held an open competition for a starting quarterback, which was quickly narrowed down to two. Both Van Dyke and Braedyn Locke have been competing with each other for the role over the past few weeks. However, Van Dyke has made the most of his opportunities to play in the starting lineup over the past week, which has essentially ended the competition in the eyes of the staff.
Despite the change in role, Van Dyke focused on continuing to work
While many may take their foot off the gas after receiving the promotion they wanted, Van Dyke is focused on continuing to work at a high level. The point guard is no stranger to losing his spot, having previously been benched in favor of another point guard in Miami. However, this time around, Van Dyke is confident and working strenuous to prove he is better than what the front office expected.
Would a mid-season quarterback change ever be possible for the Wisconsin Badgers football team?
If there’s anyone who understands what it’s like to lose your starting job, it’s Van Dyke. During his career with the Hurricanes, Van Dyke was both a backup and a regular-season starter. After being replaced King D’Eriq who suffered a shoulder injury, Van Dyke began the 2022 season as the starting player Jake Garcia.
Garcia eventually took over the starting role from Van Dyke, starting a three-game series and later filling in when Van Dyke was benched midway through the game. Van Dyke was also benched against Florida State last season in favor of the third-string quarterback at the time.
While Van Dyke has to work to maintain his starting role, a situation like the one the Hurricanes faced is something Wisconsin is trying to avoid. Head coach Luke Fickell noted during Big Ten Conference media that Van Dyke’s past behavior likely influenced his behavior.
Wisconsin football officials intend to give the quarterback time and support to prevent similar problems in the future.
