Wisconsin football opponent early preview: Northwestern Wildcats

Wisconsin football is starting to find its place on both sides of the ball. After a dominant 42-7 road win over Rutgers last Saturday to improve to 4-2, the Badgers now turn their attention to the Northwestern Wildcats. They had an impressive 37-10 victory over Maryland last Friday. Northwestern will enter this game with a 3-3 record. The match is scheduled to start at 11:00 CST on BTN. Here’s an early look at the Wildcats.

Northwestern won’t impress you on the offensive side of the ball. They are a tough football team that focuses on defense and forcing turnovers. They are very similar to Iowa and Rutgers and cannot afford turnovers. They are not good enough to come back from multiple touchdown deficits.

The Wildcats will start sophomore quarterback Jack Lausch. He is surrounded by senior veteran running back Cam Porter. He has a similar build to Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai. Porter is physically mighty and it won’t be uncomplicated to beat him. Will be a test for Wisconsin football’s defense.

The only receiving threats are seniors Bryce Kirtz and AJ Henning. Both have over 300 receiving yards. Add in Thomas Gordon and that trio accounts for 854 of the 1,088 receiving yards on this lineup. Lausch doesn’t have many options to go to.

Wisconsin Football can play this defense

This isn’t a bad defense by any stretch of the imagination for the Wildcats, but their rushing defense was suspect to say the least. They are allowing 129 yards per game, including 149 yards to Indiana and 144 yards to Washington.

What’s the one thing that works best for the Wisconsin football offense? They are playing as good a football as they have since Jonathan Taylor. I think the offensive line has a great chance to do another good performance. If the Badgers win at the line of scrimmage. you’ll see a similar offense to what they had last week against Rutgers.

Opportunistic defense

On the other hand, Northwestern’s defense is the team’s calling card. Last week, the Wildcats scored just 3 offensive touchdowns out of 37 points. The defense forced four turnovers, three of which were fumbles and great field position.

If the Badgers can get around the Northwest defense, I don’t see how the Wildcats offense can consistently move down the field. Road games at Northwestern Stadium have always haunted the Wisconsin football team. Due to renovations at Ryan Field, the game will be played in a stadium that can accommodate just under 10,000 spectators. The Badgers need to have the ball and win the battle for field position.
