The Wisconsin football team has seen a lot of players step up over the past two weeks, but none have been as good as the rookie linebacker from Florida.
Xavier Lucasformer four-star recruit out of Florida, was one of the most exhilarating players to watch at this camp for Wisconsin. Lucas previously received high praise during Big Ten Conference media day, when starting cornerback Ricardo Hallman said, “I don’t know how they let him leave Florida.” Now, after a successful first half of camp, the question is whether Lucas can carve out a role for himself on defense.

If there is one player who has made the biggest impression after two weeks of camp, it is the cornerback. Xavier Lucas. Lucas was once a four-star recruit coming from a well-known American Heritage Florida football program. The defender ultimately chose the Wisconsin football program over Miami (FL), Iowa, Illinois and Florida State.
After signing as a defensive quarterback, Wisconsin recruited Lucas as a cornerback because of his exceptional coverage skills.
Just two weeks into live camp for the Wisconsin football team, Lucas has already made his presence known and has been a nuisance to the quarterback during every practice. Lucas has impressed both the staff and his teammates early on, which could be a sign that there is more to come from the juvenile defensive back.
What does Lucas offer the Wisconsin football defense?
On the field, Lucas is a long and rapid cornerback who has the ability to cover a variety of receiving styles. Lucas can stay with receivers on the field and exploit the sideline to his advantage or he can drop down to destroy the run support play. The defensive back was initially listed as a safety but has since found a home as an outside cornerback.
Lucas is also a willing tackler and doesn’t shy away from contact when he needs to make a play. Last season, Lucas recorded four interceptions and seven pass breakups, establishing himself as an excellent defender in the air.

For Lucas, finding his way onto the field this upcoming season could be a hard task given the depth Wisconsin has at cornerback. In addition to Lucas, the Wisconsin football team also has Ricardo Hallman, RJ Delancy III, Max Lofy, Nyzier Fourqurean, Jonas DuclonAND Loving Snowden in this position.
This will be a tough decision for Wisconsin as they begin to see which players will be playing the majority of the upcoming season. Lucas could potentially earn playing time this season, but he would need to remain excellent throughout the rest of camp and also outperform some of the older players. It was really great to see Lucas make an impression, but this could just be a glimpse of what is to come in the future, not necessarily this season.
