The Wisconsin football coaching staff has been closely monitoring the competition for the quarterback position as training camp for the players is just getting underway.
Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke AND Braedyn Locke have really started to compete for the elusive quarterback position this coming season. There can only be one, and it’s between returning starter for half of last year’s season in Locke and newcomer Van Dyke. Wisconsin football head coach Lukasz Fickell He briefly discussed the battle and said it would be some time before a decision was made.
Wisconsin football quarterbacks Braedyn Locke and Tyler Van Dyke compete against Mutually
One of the main topics of conversation surrounding Wisconsin football camp was the developing quarterback rivalry. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke AND Braedyn Locke are competing with each other for the only starting position, which is something that the offensive coordinator Phil Longo recently revealed.
Head Coach Lukasz Fickell was asked about the ongoing competition right away during a media availability, and when asked who was in the lead, Fickell stated, “I’m going to stick with it.” Fickell added, “I think we’ve said before that we want to get something done sooner rather than later for the sake of continuity.”
Fickell said the Wisconsin football staff will need to take a few days to consider the decision. Right now, the Wisconsin football staff is focused on making sure every player gets equal reps and the same opportunities in live drills.
Which quarterback will lead the Wisconsin Badgers football team’s offense?
The Van Dyke-Locke battle is certainly real and could get pretty compelling when the two square off. Locke is a returning starter, and the Wisconsin staff isn’t fully prepared to just trade him away from the starting job. Locke may not have been the best last season, but he was also suddenly thrust into the starting lineup due to injury.
On the other hand, Van Dyke has a lot of experience in the starting lineup, as he led the team for three seasons Hurricanes in MiamiThe quarterback threw 54 touchdowns and 23 interceptions during his time as the Hurricanes’ starter, but Miami never quite lived up to their expectations, much like Van Dyke. The quarterback experienced a wave of adversity during his time in Miami, between three different coordinators, a series of injuries, and needy decision-making by the coaching staff.
Most importantly, Van Dyke was part of the disaster against Georgia Tech where Miami could have taken a knee to end the game with 40 seconds left. Instead, Miami decided to continue the offensive and turned the ball over, leading to a Georgia Tech goal and the win. Van Dyke has now found a change of scenery, but he will have to get through Locke before he touches the field.
How long can the competition to move forward last?
While Fickell admitted the rivalry is ongoing and far from over, the head coach was also unsure how long it could last. The goal the staff has set for itself right now is to have both quarterbacks get the same looks and practice in the same scenarios with the same players.
Each quarterback has had the opportunity to get a feel for the wide range of skillsets with both starters and backups on offense. While the quarterback battle is the most talked-about, Fickell has made it clear that no one is guaranteed a spot and that virtually every position is open to the player who performs the best.
Although the battles for position are only just beginning, we will have to wait another week for their results.
