Wisconsin Football Ready for Relentless Running Game Led by 2023 All-Conference FB

The Wisconsin football team has officially begun preparations for this week’s upcoming game against Coyotes of South Dakota.

Wisconsin defeated the Western Michigan Broncos 28-14 in a game that included a costly special teams accident for the Broncos. The Badgers staff looked to correct their mistakes against the South Dakota Coyotes as the Alabama Crimson Tide challenge looms. Wisconsin has one more week to correct its mistakes and show real dominance before it faces one of the best teams in the country.

The Wisconsin football team escaped the Western Michigan Broncos with a 28-14 win after a leisurely start. The Badgers struggled against a team that probably should have been a walk in the park for the up-to-date team. However, coach Luke Fickell did not necessarily show the improved team he boasted during training camp.

Fickell was critical of his team after the win, and felt the Badgers didn’t necessarily reach a comfort level on offense against the Broncos. The Badgers have another relatively simple game against the South Dakota Coyotes before the Alabama Crimson Tide visit. The Tide have been no joke this season even without coach Nick Sagan, scoring 63 points against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the season opener.

Wisconsin’s offense exploded for 66 points in a victory over New Mexico State in the 2022 season, but eclipsed last season’s 38 points. The Wisconsin football staff is looking to showcase a different, more aggressive offense against the Coyotes, one that could perhaps feature more deep shots down the field. The Badgers could do just that against South Dakota, but they’ll need to shut down their offense to secure an simple win.

What does the Wisconsin Badgers football coaching staff need to focus on against the Coyotes?

Wisconsin defensive line coach EJ Whitlow is shown during a spring football practice Thursday, April 25, 2024, in Madison, Wis. The Wisconsin Badgers football team plays its first game of the season against Western Michigan on Aug. 31.

For the Wisconsin football team to dominate the South Dakota Coyotes in the upcoming game, the defensive line will have to be at its best. The Coyotes are led by fullback Travis Theis, an MVFC All-Conference honoree last season. Theis has 844 yards on the ground with six touchdowns to go along with it.

Theis can also catch the ball from deep, having 27 receptions and 155 yards last season for the Coyotes offense. Quarterback Aidan Bouman is a capable playmaker with a mighty arm, but he’s not necessarily a weapon for the Coyotes offense. Bouman had 15 touchdowns and over 2,000 yards through the air last season, but it’s the ground game that really shines.

The Coyotes had another rusher behind Theis, who carried the ball a lot for the team all season. Running back Charles Pierre Jr. is Theis’s powerful counterpart out of the backfield, and carried the ball 77 times last season, scoring five times. True rookie L.J. Phillips Jr. caught a touchdown in the 45-3 win the Coyotes needed to start the season and showed he has a chance.

Despite being listed as a fullback, Theis doesn’t fit the typical sluggish and leisurely stereotype that surrounds the position. Theis has explosive speed that allows him to get past defenders, and he also uses a lot of cuts and jukes to get down the field. The Wisconsin football team will need to focus on Theis and prevent him from getting into open space to stop the Coyotes’ offense.
