It’s safe and sound to say the Wisconsin football team will face its toughest challenge of the season when it faces #4 Alabama this weekend.
The Crimson Tide are also 2-0 on the season after a close win over the USF Bulls in which the Bulls took the lead in the third quarter. Wisconsin has had some close games as the offense continues to struggle to get its full potential. However, Wisconsin may not need to put up its most finished product on the court if they can ponderous down Alabama’s fast-paced offense.
Wisconsin football must retain Milroe, Williams to limit production to beat Crimson Tide
The Wisconsin football team is just a day away from facing its toughest challenge of the season, the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Crimson Tide were last in Madison in 1928 and last played Wisconsin in 2015, a neutral-site clash in Arlington, Texas. The Wisconsin Badgers fell to Alabama 35-17 as the Crimson Tide crushed Wisconsin’s defense.
The Wisconsin football team is in a similar situation heading into this game, with a struggling defensive line and exhilarating rushers waiting for a chance to run on defense. Quarterback Jalen Milroe in particular will want to run against the Wisconsin Badgers defense because of the gaps he can find. Previously, it was Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake who were able to find gaps and hit them with precision against the Badgers.
Wisconsin will also have to worry about the speed of the rest of the offense, as many other players can fly like Milroe does. In particular, wide receivers Ryan Williams and Gertie Bernard, with Williams being an absolute weapon against defenses up top. Bernard is at his third school in three years, but he has been a gadget, trick-play receiver his entire career and is doing the same now for the Crimson Tide.
Can the Wisconsin Badgers football team stop the Alabama Crimson Tide offense?
The question for the Badgers against the Crimson Tide was never whether the Badgers would be able to stop the offense, but rather limit it. There is no doubt that Milroe cannot be completely shut down, as he can still have an impact with his legs on the weakest part of Wisconsin’s defense. Alabama’s last game against USF is a perfect example of this, as the Bulls kept the pressure on and kept the offense going for three quarters.
But Alabama’s offense is inescapable, and it finally did break the game open in the fourth quarter against the Bulls. Despite three sacks and limiting Milroe to just two yards rushing, the quarterback still scored two points and passed for two more. As great as Milroe is, there are other weapons to worry about, including quarterback Ryan Williams.
Williams, a 17-year-old sensation, has yet to be truly tested by defenses and will certainly face his toughest test against cornerback Ricardo Hallman. Hallman will likely be around Williams throughout the game, as he is arguably the deadliest receiver on Alabama’s roster. Williams was held to just 68 yards and one touchdown on four receptions last game after recording over 100 yards and two scores in his debut.
The Wisconsin Badgers have the ability to potentially ponderous down the Crimson Tide’s offensive production, much like the Bulls did for most of the game. It will all come down to execution for the Badgers, as mistakes or basic points are how the Crimson Tide develop such an insurmountable lead over their opponents.
