Wisconsin football: Versatile 4-star athlete eyes potential campus visit

The Wisconsin football coaching staff has been working difficult to recruit prospects for the 2026 class, and one recruit has expressed interest in joining the squad.

Damon FergusonThe 2026 four-star recruit from Maryland became a top scouting target for the Wisconsin football staff after being offered a scholarship in May. Ferguson is a versatile athlete who has caught the attention of many college players, as he currently has 20 scholarship offers with many more on the way. During a recent interview with Sports Heroics in WisconsinFerguson explained his contact with Wisconsin and what influenced the boost in recruiting.

Early in the recruiting process, Wisconsin football offered a scholarship to one of its hottest recruits in recent memory. Damon FergusonThe 2026 four-star athlete has drawn a lot of interest since the recruiting period began last month, with much of his recruitment boost coming from the fact that Ferguson can play linebacker and running back at a high level.

Ferguson would be a bit too low to play as a college safety, but he has already built a reputation as a cornerback who can cover an island. Quarterbacks don’t like to challenge Ferguson, mainly because he can pick off a pass at any time. Early on, Ferguson says Rutgers, Pitt, Maryland, Syracuse, Freedom, StanfordAND UFC we had the closest contact.

For Ferguson, being an athlete in the midst of the recruiting process can often become a headache, given the decisions and divisions involved in recruiting. However, Ferguson handles it with ease as he continues to add to his game on both ends of the pitch.

As a defensive back, Ferguson has worked on his game and skills in the position since he began playing. Ferguson has also worked with a movement specialist since he began playing to improve his footwork and skills as a defensive back. When asked about his experience, the athlete stated, “It’s like don’t waste his time and he’ll pass on all the knowledge he has.”

However, Ferguson had a completely different experience with running back, as he believes the position is completely different. Ferguson stated, “With running back, it comes naturally, but I’m starting to learn more. It’s a lot of fun when you add to the things you already know.”

Ferguson’s versatility has led to a fairly distinct divide in his recruitment, as programs decide which position they want him to play. When asked, the athlete stated, “I think there’s a divide in terms of how I’m recruited as far as offense and defense.” Ferguson continued, “I think I can fit in no matter where [College Coaches] I think I can best help the team win.”

What might the Wisconsin Badgers football staff have done if Ferguson were on the field?

For the Wisconsin football staff and other programs, figuring out what to do on the field with Ferguson shouldn’t be a challenge. Ferguson, a talented running back and linebacker, has worked tirelessly to develop his versatility on the field. The athlete is comfortable enough in any position to benefit his team, no matter where he’s put.

Asked about his versatility, Ferguson said: “I think versatility definitely helps, but I work really difficult at it. As a defensive back, I’ve been working with my movement specialist since I was nine or 10 and he holds the lads he coaches to a high standard.”

Maintaining a high standard at the next level is also something Ferguson is concerned about when deciding on a program, but the rest of the details are still unclear. When asked what he’s looking for in a program, Ferguson said, “I’m still trying to figure it out, it could be one of those things that you just know.” However, the athlete added that he likes coaches to be “regular” with or without their players.
