The Badgers played a tough game against the Western Michigan Broncos, which was defined by a failed punt by the Broncos. Wisconsin played excellent defense, holding the Broncos to just 14 points, but the offensive side of the ball was a different story for Wisconsin. The offense struggled to consistently get down the field against the Broncos, which is concerning considering the gigantic challenge in the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Wisconsin needs to find someone who can step up on offense and provide value for the time they spend on the field. The Wisconsin football staff has already found that player on the defensive end, with true freshman cornerback Xavier Lucas providing a gigantic boost in the first game. Lucas played in restricted action but had two tackles and an interception to seal the game for the Badgers.
Lucas signed with the Wisconsin football program as a four-star recruit and showed why he was so highly rated in his first game. Lucas provided excellent coverage and made a toe-tap catch to set up an interception for quarterback Hayden Wolff. The cornerback immediately impressed the Wisconsin football staff on the practice field, and now he has made an impression on the field as well.

Lucas will become a bigger part of the defense in the future as Wisconsin continues to find ways to utilize the defensive back. Coach Luke Fickell said after the game that he was impressed with Lucas’ play, who has only played restricted time. With Lucas making such a difference in his restricted game, the cornerback role could become a bigger part in the near future.
Lucas is a gigantic, physical cornerback, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing in at nearly 200 pounds when pads are on. The cornerback uses his length to his advantage and generates pass defenses with his long arms. It is complex to generate any separation against Lucas, both because of his size and speed.
The Wisconsin Badgers football staff was impressed with what they saw from Lucas and will likely start him more often against a weaker opponent in South Dakota. The Coyotes have a robust team, but they are currently a 21-point underdog and should win easily against the Badgers.
